Czech Republic Warms up
to Online Gambling
January
5 - Today (January 5th 2009) the Czech Republic government will
change its gambling laws to allow a limited number of domestic
online gambling licenses to be granted, which will signal the
beginning of a legalised and regulated online gambling industry
in the former communist country.
The Czech Republic's new online gambling laws will allow five of
the country's largest gambling operators to apply for the
coveted online gambling licenses from the Finance Ministry.
This means Czechs will soon join a growing number of European
Union citizens allowed to legally gamble online.
Said Tomas Bahnik, a spokesperson from one of the likely
licensees, Fortuna Group, 'We are very happy that the Czech
government has at long last made the move to legalise and
regulate online gambling. As such, the online gambling industry
here will undoubtedly be very strict and well monitored.'
The move is also expected to eradicate underage gambling and
interest in foreign-owned online gambling sites. Up until now,
Czech-based online gamblers have gambled freely on foreign-owned
sites.
The country's new online gambling laws are also aimed at keeping
online gambling revenues in the country.
'For too long we have been unhappy that foreign online gambling
companies have been allowed to operate in the Czech Republic
without any legal controls, which means they operate in this
country illegally. But now we'll have the same opportunities as
these foreign gaming operators,' said Bahnik.
Good on you Czech Republic!
