Dutch Senate
Approves Online Gambling Tax Bill
Sept
11 - Holland has become the latest in a long line of European
countries that have accepted online gambling as opposed to
banning it, with news that the Dutch Senate has approved a
proposed bill that will pave the way for the government to tax
online gambling.
The proposed taxation bill will allow the Dutch government to
tax online gambling games such as roulette, craps and
blackjack for local and foreign players, as well as the online
gambling operators that the country has up until now prosecuted
or tried to prosecute.
Earlier in the year the Dutch Senate narrowly failed to pass an
amendment to the Dutch Betting and Gaming Act that would
have given Holland Casino - which is government owned and
operated - the sole rights to provide online gambling games on a
trial basis.
The bill fell through after the Dutch government was criticized
for attempting to create an unfair and 'monopolistic' online
gambling situation. However, the government - who up until
recently has tried to emulate a US-style online gambling ban -
decided that online gambling taxation is a better option.
Although the Dutch government by no means supports online
gambling, it has at least realized that it makes more sense to
tax the popular Internet practice and help top up the country's
coffers as opposed to spending millions of euros going after
online gambling companies.
In the past, the government targeted Dutch online gambling
company Oranje Casino and Swedish online gambling firm Unibet.
