Head of NRGP Talks about Online Gambling in SA

Responsible Gambling in South AfricaAugust 5 - With the advent of cheaper and faster internet in the country, these days South Africans are just as 'internet savvy' as their Western counterparts, being active users and participants of round-the-clock services and applications such as email, Google, VoIP (Skype), Facebook, Twitter as well as online gambling sites.

As the global online gambling industry continues to change and evolve, so too are an increasing number of
South Africans discovering online gambling. While the popular internet activity is not strictly speaking yet legal in South Africa, currently South Africans are not legally being prevented from gambling online.

This means that more
South Africans are finding out for themselves what local and international online casinos, online poker rooms, online sports betting sites and online bingo casinos have to offer in terms of games; no-deposit bonuses; welcome bonuses; daily, weekly and monthly promotions, and more.

Although the legal status of
online gambling in South Africa is 'up in the air', supporters of the pastime are hoping that lawmakers will sooner rather than later legalise and regulate online gambling in the country, so that 'watchdog' type organizations can be put in place to combat possible underage and problem gambling.

'
In South Africa it is currently estimated that about a quarter of a million people regularly gamble online,' said National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) executive director, Peter Collins. 'However, it is very difficult to calculate precisely how many individuals in South Africa participate in online gambling.'

According to unconfirmed reports, there may currently be
as many as six million gamblers in South Africa generating revenues in excess of R20 billion each year. Of that, as much as 7 percent is thought to be generated through online gambling. South Africans are particularly fond of online casinos and poker rooms.

Said Collins, 'I
t is much easier playing online poker, which is a very popular form of internet gambling, than organising a poker evening in person. If you, however, ban something like this (online gambling) completely it will just drive it underground into the arms of organised crime.'
