Online Gambling
Generated $9 Billion in 2007
Sept
30 - Just in case you thought that the due to the online
gambling ban in the United States and various other
countries that the popular Internet activity is waning, you'll
be interested to note that last year the global online gambling
industry generated a whopping $9 billion in Internet gaming
revenues.
According to a recent online gambling study conducted in the United Kingdom,
last year over 22 million players from all over the world logged into and played
at wide variety of online gambling destinations including online casinos, online
poker rooms, online bingo casinos and online sportsbooks.
The study revealed that many of the world's top online gambling sites generated
an average of $35 per player each month in higher income countries and around
$10 per player in lower income countries. These figures mean that approximately
7 percent of the globe's Internet users participate in some form of online
gambling.
However, with hundreds of thousands of online gambling fans based in countries
that frown upon online gambling, the percentage of active online gambling fans
is probably far higher but extremely difficult to quantify. In the US for
instance, there are still hundreds of thousands of 'active' online gamblers.
Interestingly, while many in the industry feel that online gambling is fast
approaching the saturation point, new online gambling sites are springing up
like wild mushrooms and for good reason. There is loads of money to be made.
However, while it is relatively cheap to launch new sites, the major costs lie
in the marketing.
The idea is to attract players to online gambling websites through generous
bonuses, exciting competitions, lucrative promotions and - in countries that
allow it - extensive advertising campaigns. Online gambling operators that can't
afford to spend money on marketing do not last very long in this business.
As for the future, despite online gambling facing increasingly
tough opposition, the practice is here to stay as along people
continue to have the right to decide for themselves whether to
gamble online or not.
The good news is that the South Africa online gambling industry
is growing in leaps and bounds each month.
