Partouche Betting Ads Featuring Cantona Sent Off

Eric Cantona in Partouche Betting adsOctober 13 - Just because online gambling is legal and regulated in the United Kingdom, does not mean that its Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) does not ban online gambling ads it deems inappropriate, as in the recent case of Partouche Betting's TV and online ads featuring former French football player, Eric Cantona.

The TV and online commercials commissioned by the French online gambling company were part of a $4.3 million advertising campaign to coincide with the year's Euro 2008 football tournament. The ads featured images of Cantona dressed up as a Medieval king over the slogans: 'Bet To Forget' and 'Click Or Regret'.

The ASA deemed the ads to be 'exploitative of the susceptibilities of vulnerable people' or in other words, the ads were too clever for thick people. The advertisements were designed to poke fun at England's failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 while at the same time encouraging people to wager online.

The Partouche Betting online ads - which were launched at the same time as the television campaign - contained links to various short videos portraying Cantona dressed up as a king telling punters and football fans: 'Europe kicked you out of the Euro 2008, who cares?', 'Bet to forget' and 'To bet or not to bet? There is no question.'

The ASA confirmed that it had received a complaint about the Partouche Betting's ad campaign because it suggested that online gambling could 'provide an escape from personal problems'. The ASA also questioned whether one of the campaign slogans - Click Or Regret - showed online gambling as an indispensable pastime.

In response to the ban, a Partouche Betting statement said the ad campaign was simply a 'light-hearted' take on England's failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 and the disappointment of English football fans that went along with it. It also said that the advertisements were designed solely in the context of Euro 2008.

Unfortunately the ASA upheld its ban on the advertisements. Click here to watch one of the ads: Partouche Betting.
