South African
National Lottery Boss Under Fire
June 23 - Professor Vevek Ram, the chief executive of South Africa's National
Lotteries Board (NLB), is coming under increasing fire for his apparent poor
leadership style as well blatant mismanagement of the South African National
Lottery.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) recently reported that several
NLB employees were pushing for Ram to step down, citing reasons of incompetence
and lack of confidence in the way he is managing the multi-billion rand South
African National Lottery.
Employees allegedly lodged a complaint with their union, the National Union of
Public Service and Allied Workers, and initiated a 'vote of no confidence' in
Ram, requesting the NLB to remove him from the post by as early as the end of
this month (June 2008).
In addition, representatives of South African political party, the Democratic
Alliance (DA), have also urged authorities to launch an investigation into the
reason why billions of rand in lottery funds earmarked for good causes and
charities, have still not been paid out.
Said a DA spokesperson, 'While Professor Ram's leadership style is being
questioned by his own employees, we would like to know why this is affecting the
many charities and other good causes that are desperately awaiting much-needed
lottery grants but have yet to receive a cent.'
The call comes as an increasing number of charities and non-profit organisations
in South Africa are close to closing down due to lack of funding, many of which
are not even sure if the NLB has received their applications for lottery grants,
never mind processed them.
Unfortunately the National Lottery debacle is yet another
example of poor leadership and mismanagement in high profile
positions in South Africa today.
