Study shows Aussies and
Kiwis love Online Gambling
March
23 - According to a recent
online gambling study
conducted and published by two professors at a leading Canadian
university has revealed that on average
online gamblers in Australia and New Zealand
spend more on online gambling per month, than players anywhere
else in the world.
According to professors Robert Wood and Robert Williams of the
University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Australia's and New
Zealand's online gambling fans
spend an average of $435 a month
on online casinos, online poker rooms, online sports betting
sites and online bingo casinos, the
highest of all the people surveyed.
After the professors
surveyed over 20 000 adults from 105 countries
and compiled the results, they found that in terms of monthly
online gambling spend, the two antipodean countries were far
ahead of all the other countries surveyed, including the
United Kingdom, South Africa and the Netherlands.
Said Professor Wood, 'Australian online gamblers do report
higher average monthly gambling spending than the overall
average we observed in our sample. This suggests that
Australian online gambling fans
do indeed spend more on gambling compared with internet gamblers
from other countries.'
Unfortunately, however, there are fears that the online
gambling study results will be used by
anti-online gambling organisations in Australia
to justify the ban of online gambling, because they claim it is
linked to problem gambling. One of which is long-time online
gambling proponent,
the Salvation Army.
Said the Salvation Army's problem-gambling service co-ordinator,
Gerard Byrne, 'We would encourage bans on any capability to
gamble on credit
and believe the Federal Government should take a lead on this.
The state of NSW
has got a culture where gambling is the widely accepted pastime.'
For our money here at dish, we think it is perfectly acceptable
to gamble online if you're an Aussie. What better way to
distract yourself from the
billions of flies
waiting to stick to you when you step foot outside, or forget
that you sport an
awful accent
honed from your proud prison colony days?
